Proto-Slavic

Etymology

From earlier *sluxěti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *klauˀs-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlows-, from *ḱlew-. Baltic cognates include Lithuanian kláusti (to ask), klausýti (to listen), 3sg. klaũso, Old Prussian klausiton (to hear), klausēmai (I listen). Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit श्रोषति (śróṣati, to listen, to obey), Old Irish clúas (hearing, ear), Old High German hlosēn (to listen), English listen, loud, etc. Derksen asserts that the initial *s- (vs. Baltic initial *k-) was adopted from related words with e-grade vocalism, where it would be expected.
