Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From earlier *sluxěti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *klauˀs-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱlows-, from *ḱlew-. Baltic cognates include Lithuanian kláusti (“to ask”), klausýti (“to listen”), 3sg. klaũso, Old Prussian klausiton (“to hear”), klausēmai (“I listen”). Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit श्रोषति (śróṣati, “to listen, to obey”), Old Irish clúas (“hearing, ear”), Old High German hlosēn (“to listen”), English listen, loud, etc. Derksen asserts that the initial *s- (vs. Baltic initial *k-) was adopted from related words with e-grade vocalism, where it would be expected.
