Etymology

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian táldyti (“to silence, to soothe”) (dialectal), tìlti (“to become silent”) (1sg. tylù), tylė́ti (“to be silent”) (1sg. tyliù), Latvian tilinât (“to spoil (a child)”). Other Indo-European cognates include Old Irish con·tuili (“to sleep”), Old Armenian թողում (tʻołum, “to leave”), possibly Old High German stilli (“quiet”).
