From *vyti (“to howl”) + *-kati. Cognate with Latvian ūkšuot (“to shout”), Lithuanian ūkáuti, ū́kčioti (“to call, to evoke”), Proto-Germanic *auhjōną (“to make noise”).
Similar to Russian ау́кать (aúkatʹ, “to shout "auh!"”), formed in the same manner from the interjection ау (au, “wow, wail”).
