First attested as rodanburg in 918-948. Compound of Old Dutch rōt (red) and burg (fortified settlement, castle). Originally the name of a polder, named in turn after a former castle and nunnery. The toponym is potentially a reference to terra sigilata used by Roman soldiers to construct a military outpost near the current neighbourhood.
