Dutch
Etymology
First attested as zeuenghe waet in 1326. Compound of Middle Dutch seuen (“seven”) and gewald (“power, domain”). Perhaps derived from the fact that seven parties were empowered to use the common lands near the settlement. A proposed derivation from Middle Dutch savelboom (“savin, Juniperus sabina”) is incorrect. The current "German" spelling of the name derives from the time when the village belonged to the Duchy of Jülich (see also Bocholtz and Einighausen).
