English
Etymology
Borrowed from Dutch Simpelveld.
Proper noun
Simpelveld
- A municipality of Limburg, Netherlands.
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as semplouei and senplouoir in 1155. Derived from the Gallo-Roman toponym Latin *Sempervivetum (“Evergreen”), here perhaps referring to a forest of holly. Proposed derivations from *Simploviacum or a compound of Old Dutch semp (“rush”) and lo (“light forest”) do not match well with the oldest attestations. The current form of the toponym developed under the influence of a folk-etymological reinterpration of the name as a compound of simpel (“simple”) and veld (“field”).
