Borrowed from West Frisian Slappeterp, derived in turn from a compound of an unclear first element and Old Frisian dorp (“village, artificial mound used for habitation”). The first element may be a term cognate to Old English slipor (“slippery”), slepa (“sleep”) or the superlative form of slap (“weak”).
