One of our definitions for purl is "the edge of lace trimmed with loops"; a glance at google books:"pearl edge" is enough to confirm that pearl shares this sense. Webster's 1913 has a broader definition for what I believe to be the same sense: "An embroidered and puckered border; a hem or fringe, often of gold or silver twist; also, a pleat or fold, as of a band."
