Borrowed from an early Sami substrate, from Proto-Samic *Tëmpël-kuoškë, from *tëmpël (compare Northern Sami dappal (“(short) stream pool”)) + *kuoškë (“rapids”) (cognate with Finnish koski; the Finnish name could thus be a partial calque from Sami). The reason for the -r- instead of -l- may be dissimilation of the external locative forms (*Tampelella > Tamperella) or perhaps more likely due to the variation of -l ~ -r suffixes in words referring to places. In the past also proposed to derive from Old Swedish tamber (“tame, temperate”). which is now considered less likely, as the name is likely older than Swedish influence in Finland.
