Template:RQ:Quarles Afflicted Souls

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from two versions of the following work by Francis Quarles, the online versions of which are at Google Books:

• Judgement and Mercie for Afflicted Souls (1st edition, 1646), which is claimed in a preface by the author's widow to be the authorized edition.
• Barnabas and Boanerges: Or, Wine and Oyle for Afflicted Souls (2nd edition, 1646), which is presumably the plagiarized version; the 1st edition (London: R. Bishop for Richard Loundes, , 1644; →OCLC) is not currently available online.

The template takes the following parameters:

• |version= – if quoting from the Barnabas version, specify |version=Barnabas. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to the authorized Judgement and Mercie version of the work.
• |1= or |chapter=, and |meditation= –
  • If quoting from the main part of the work, the name of the chapter quoted from, and (in the authorized version) the meditation number in uppercase Roman numerals.
  • If quoting from "Courteous Reader" in the authorized version, specify |chapter=Courteous Reader. As this chapter is unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=F39nAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP3, specify |page=3.
• |2= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

• |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
