Usage
This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from four pamphlets by Jonathan Swift collectively known as the Drapier's Letters (1st edition, 1724). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:
- Letter 1: A Letter to the Shop-keepers, Tradesmen, Farmers, and Common-people of Ireland, Concerning the Brass Half-pence Coined by Mr. Woods, with a Design to have Them Pass in this Kingdom (1st edition, March 1724).
- Letter 2: A Letter to Mr. Harding the Printer, upon the Occasion of a Paragraph in his News-paper of Aug. 1st. Relating to Mr. Wood's Half-pence (1st edition, 4 August 1724 ).
- Letter 3: Some Observations upon a Paper, Call'd The Report of the Committee of the Most Honourable the Privy-Council in England, Relating to Wood's Half-pence (1st edition, 25 August 1724 ).
- Letter 4: A Letter to the Whole People of Ireland (1st edition, written 13 October 1724, published 21 or 22 October 1724 ).
Parameters
The template takes the following parameters:
|1=
, |volume=
, or |letter=
– mandatory: the "volume" or letter number quoted from in Arabic numerals, from |letter=1
to |letter=4
.
|2=
or |page=
, or |pages=
– mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
- Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this:
|pages=10–11
.
- You must also use
|pageref=
to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
- This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
|3=
, |text=
, or |passage=
– the passage to be quoted.
|footer=
– a comment on the passage quoted.
|brackets=
– use |brackets=on
to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
