The sorting in the called lua module is broken at as far as this template is concerned. Look at onion#Derived_terms, in which the list is already sorted but the output is in some oddly shuffled order.
Perhaps it's sorting by template source code rather than basic entry text. Entries using the "vern" template seem to be grouped together.

That's not the only problem with this unpleasant template. It has display problems, that I've seen a few times: (1) It does not allow a section header, but simply plops a duplicate "Derived terms" below the "Derived terms" header that is already present, (2) It incorrectly displays some terms --look at orange#Derived_terms, where "satsuma" orange displays as "atsuma orange",
"sour orange" as "our orange", "sweet orange" as "weet orange". This damn template has issues. -- · (talk) 04:35, 10 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

- Why this choice it's a bit weird. I just noticed that by adding derivative to aisle, where aisled is sorted before aisle seat. In my humble opinion, space should be count as letter and be sort before "a". V!v£ l@ Rosière /Whisper…/ 12:53, 18 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
