Should this add a category? --Connel MacKenzie 19:27, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
- It does now. --Bequw → τ 23:03, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
The current vertical position of this template is about level with the L1 page title, above all the language (L2) entries (no matter where it is included). This implies that the whole page was featured when it fact it was just the English entry. This has two problems. (1) About 500 pages where this template is used have entries below the English section for which this implication is false, and (2) eventually we might want to feature an English entry where there is a preceding Translingual entry, which would break the even looser implication that the template applies to the following entry. I therefore propose that this template float on the right-hand side (I think this is the only RHS one that doesn't). We can then move the template uses into the English entries, at least where there's possibility for confusion. --Bequw → τ 15:02, 28 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Please, someone allowed to do so, replace the hyphen with an en dash (thereby getting the resultant expression to display like this: "WOTD – "), as the former is typographically incorrect in this context. Thanks – ὁ οἶστρος (talk) 16:26, 10 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
- Done, in this edit! (discussion)

It looks like this template is creating an extra space.Curb Chain (talk) 22:21, 11 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
- Good point – I just noticed this as well.
- It specifically happens when this comes before
{{wikipedia}}
, but not after – and if you stack either of these templates, it’s still fine. I’ve made a few fixes, but they don’t help…

I created Module:was wotd that could be used in this template. It renders like so:
{{was wotd|2013|March|5|2014|March|7|2023|April|8|2024|December|24|2025|October|2}}
It also handles date errors: {{was wotd|2013|March|5|2014}}
, {{was wotd|2013|Foo|1}}
, {{was wotd|March|2023|4}}
And it fixes ordering, and only links when the archive page exists:{{was wotd|2014|March|7|2013|March|7|2024|February|7}}
It also adds pages to categories based on year and month as well, for example:
If we want to use this, just replace {{was wotd}}
with the contents in {{was wotd/sandbox}}

- If it changes nothing besides making it more robust and categorising better then I see no issue with deploying this, except that I'm not sure why the /MONTH categories are necessary; I think just /YEAR and /YEAR/MONTH would be good. These categories will also need to be defined in the category tree. Saph (talk) 19:20, 31 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
- I can easily remove the /MONTH categories. I added it because it might be interesting to browse by month regardless of year, like all of the WOTDs in December, but perhaps that's less interesting. — Naomi Amethyst 19:28, 31 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
- @NaomiAmethyst: sounds good. (By the way, can the unintended categorization of this page be removed? Perhaps tweak the module so that it only categorizes when used in an entry, and not on other pages.) — Sgconlaw (talk) 20:02, 31 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
- Fixed! Also removed the /MONTH category. — Naomi Amethyst 20:24, 31 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
- Should this module be expanded to cover
{{was fwotd}}
too?
- Tangentially, is the
.was-wotd
class necessary? It's only used on 3 pages besides {{was wotd}}
. Saph (talk) 20:57, 31 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
- That's a reasonable idea. I'll take a swing at augmenting this to support
{{was fwotd}}
as well. As far as .was-wotd
, I assume it's for Template:was wotd#Customization — Naomi Amethyst 21:27, 31 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
- I added support for fwotd:
{{was fwotd|fr|2024|March|25}}
{{was fwotd|de|2015|April|31|2025|March|26|2025|October|3}}
- And also support hiding future dates from displaying until they're past, which
{{was fwotd}}
has but {{was wotd}}
didn't. — Naomi Amethyst 03:19, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
- @NaomiAmethyst: Actually, I prefer that the tag not be hidden in this way, because it makes it difficult for editors to determine which entries have already been nominated or set as WORDs or FWOTDs. This leads to repeated nominations. Please either unhide the tags, or change the wording to “will be WORD”. — Sgconlaw (talk) 05:55, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
- That sounds good. I'll update it later today. — Naomi Amethyst 17:26, 1 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
- Thoughts?
{{was wotd|2025|October|12}}
{{was wotd|2024|March|6|3001|January|1}}

- @NaomiAmethyst: looks good! Thanks. — Sgconlaw (talk) 00:01, 2 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
- Added some testcases to see it render in many situations—Template:was wotd/sandbox/testcases—and it seems to be good to me. Anything else need to be done to get this updated to use the module? I cannot make the edit myself as I am not a template editor. — Naomi Amethyst 23:12, 2 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
- @NaomiAmethyst I've gone ahead and updated this template and
{{was fwotd}}
. Be sure to look out for related errors in CAT:E. Saph (talk) 23:36, 2 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
