phyllophobia

(moved here from User talk:Equinox)

At 17:28, 6 December 2021, you deleted the entry phyllophobia, on the grounds it was a protologism. Consider these assorted usages:

  • (Can we date this quote?), “phobo-, phob-, -phobia, -phobias, -phobe, -phobiac, -phobist, -phobic, -phobism, -phobous”, in English-Word Information (wordinfo.info):
phyllophobia… An excessive fear of leaves: Each time Virginia saw the excessive amount of leafage on the ground in the fall, she had phyllophobia because it was the time of year to do the raking which took many days to complete!
  • (Can we date this quote?), “Phobias: Types of Phobias”, in Science Encyclopedia (science.jrank.org):
An enormous number of specific phobias exist. Some of these, such as claustrophobia, may be familiar to you. Others… are probably unfamiliar. … Fear of leaves—phyllophobia
  • 2002, J. Addis, Books Ireland: Issues 246-254, page 215:
However it might be useful this autumn to know that phyllophobia is a fear of leaves….
  • 2003, John G. Robertson, An Excess of Phobias and Manias: A Compilation of Anxieties, Obsessions, and Compulsions That Push Many Over the Edge of Sanity, page 146:
phyllophobia: An excessive fear of leaves.
  • 2016 October 22, Ron Wolfe, “Jump in, if you’re not phyllophobic”, in Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:
Phyllophobia, the fear of leaves, might not be as much in the news this autumn as coulrophobia, the fear of clowns. But anywhere that crinkly, dead leaves are, some people are scared of them.

A website on English words, listing phobias; an Irish literary magazine giving that definition; a newspaper article doing likewise under a headline featuring the word’s derivative; a book specifically on phobias; a science encyclopedia. Surely they are not ALL under the control of the word’s coiner. To me the word seems to have become accepted across a wide range of writers, both topically and geographically, going back at least twenty years… which doesn’t look like a “neologism”, either. Please undo that deletion. Thanks! .Raven (talk) 04:02, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

@.Raven: of the quotations you provided, we would only regard the 2016 one as a use. The others are mentions, which are insufficient for our purposes: see “Wiktionary:Criteria for inclusion#Conveying meaning”. You need to find at least two more uses. — Sgconlaw (talk) 05:30, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

introduction to web resource

Have you ever heard of "Google Books"? It's this great website where you can search thousands of books, and find words just like the ones you've been asking about! It only takes a few seconds, whereas getting confirmation of words via RfD takes substantially longer. kwami (talk) 07:25, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

That's great! You can use it to add the missing citations to the articles you create, or have already created. (I trust you're not expecting anyone else to search for the cites you already found.) – .Raven (talk) 08:56, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

talkpage notifications

There is no need to notify page creators of pending deletion of their pages. Indeed, I believe the expectation here is that you don't do it, since many long-term users here have thousands of page creations, some perhaps even tens of thousands, and a lot of us check the deletion request pages frequently to keep tabs on what's going on. Also, in regards to this:

I trust you're not expecting anyone else to search for the cites you already found.

I would say that, as compared to Wikipedia, this project is more cooperative, and when someone's page is nominated for deletion, other editors will indeed pitch in and help out to try to rescue the page or see what else can be done with it. Lastly, please be aware that the usual expectation for both RFD and RFV is that requests be left up for a minimum of one month before they are closed. Soap 19:33, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

@Soap: As I said to kwami, I chose RfD (rather than requesting speedy-delete) specifically to give kwami a chance to cite whatever RSs kwami had already found before creating these pages. As for cooperation… did you read the exchange in the top section here, #phyllophobia (moved here from User talk:Equinox)? – .Raven (talk) 20:20, 2 May 2023 (UTC)
