Hmong (RPA: Hmoob), also spelled Mong (RPA: Moob), and also known as Miao in China, is a group of languages. It is sometimes considered a dialect continuum, but its dozens of members are not mutually intelligible.
The Hmong Daw ("White Hmong", RPA: Hmoob Dawb) variety of Hmong uses several tones. These are represented in RPA as follows:
high | -b | pob (“ball”) |
high falling | -j | poj (“female”) |
mid rising | -v | pov (“throw”) |
mid | -∅ | po (“spleen”) |
mid low (breathy) | -g | pog (“paternal grandmother”) |
low | -s | pos (“thorn”) |
low falling (creaky) | -m | pom (“see”) |
low rising | -d | (occurs in place of -m at the end of phrases) |
