tree=1

is the intent to have the default behavior to not show the tree? it seems that in the long term, if this template sees wide use, it might be better to opt out rather than opt in. Soap 11:21, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Well, we'll have to see how often it's actually enabled in practice. Ioaxxere (talk) 15:20, 22 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Comments

We should be explicit that etymology trees do not replace the existing etymology information but coexist with it. Are the trees to be presented above or below the classic etymology? This, that and the other (talk) 12:06, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@This, that and the other: 1) That's correct — if you'd like, you can change the wording to make this clearer. 2) I have no preference either way. Ioaxxere (talk) 18:14, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question

How does a language community make a decision? --RichardW57 (talk) 06:53, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@RichardW57: Through a BP thread or something like that, and then whatever a language's editors agree on could be added to Wiktionary:About . Ioaxxere (talk) 18:44, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Horizontal orientation?

It's cool but it could take up loads of vertical space. (The collapsible section doesn't really resolve this since it hides away the entire thing.) Equinox 18:40, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Equinox: I think horizontal space is the bigger concern. Some of the trees already require a bit of horizontal scrolling on mobile. Ioaxxere (talk) 18:44, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Ioaxxere: I only ever use computers, not phones. I gathered we had a separate mobile view which could be done differently (the m. subdomain). Equinox 18:47, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Equinox: Or even better: have it adjust dynamically based off of screen width. That will definitely require some tinkering with MediaWiki:Common.js... Ioaxxere (talk) 18:59, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Or it could be an option... Vininn126 (talk) 15:57, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I also know @Sławobóg was interested in a horizontal option. Vininn126 (talk) 16:47, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
