First attested as sydehem in the twelfth century. A compound of either Proto-Germanic *sîda (“sloping”) or Old Dutch Sîdo (a personal name) and heem (“home, settlement”). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to dam (“dam”). Compare Didam.
