Uncertain, perhaps borrowed from a Turkic languages before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries). Compare Turkic *oprā- (to chop up, cut to pieces). It may have entered Hungarian in the form *opraq (tiny, small).[1][2]
