From Latin arsenicum, from Ancient Greek ἀρσενικόν (arsenikón, “yellow arsenic”) (influenced by ἀρρηνικός (arrhēnikós, “potent, virile”)), ultimately (via Semitic) from Middle Iranian *zarnīk (“gold-coloured”), compare Persian زرنیخ (zarnix, “orpiment”), زرنی (zarni).
