From Old Norse bjarnvardsvaka (literally “Bjarnvard's wake”). The former part is named after Bernardino of Siena (1380–1444), but was later reanalyzed as bjørn (“bear”). The latter is equivalent to vòke, from vǫku, the oblique singular of Old Norse vaka.
