Etymology

Unknown, but cognate with Aromanian cioaric (cloth) and cioariți (woolen socks).

Either borrowed from Ottoman Turkish چارق (çarık, a kind of sandal), whence also Greek τσαρούχι (tsaroúchi),[1] or derived from Paleo-Balkan. If this latter indigenous origin is correct, then the term could be seen as a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (to hide, conceal), whence Latin cutis (skin).[2]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈt͡ʃo̯aret͡ʃʲ/

Noun

cioareci m pl (plural only)

  1. a kind of Transylvanian trousers traditionally made out of wool
  2. socks
