Romanian
Etymology
Unknown, but cognate with Aromanian cioaric (“cloth”) and cioariți (“woolen socks”).
Either borrowed from Ottoman Turkish چارق (çarık, “a kind of sandal”), whence also Greek τσαρούχι (tsaroúchi),[1] or derived from Paleo-Balkan. If this latter indigenous origin is correct, then the term could be seen as a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (“to hide, conceal”), whence Latin cutis (“skin”).[2]
