From Old French eschirgaite (“patrol; skirmish”), from Frankish *skarawahta, from *skara (“troop”) (from Proto-Germanic *skarō (“portion, share”)) + *wahta (“watch, guard”).^[1] Doublet of zaragata. Cognate with German Scharwache.
