Etymology
Possibly from a Vulgar Latin root *cautelinus (with metathesis), from Latin cautēla, or alternatively from Latin continue or continuō (“continuously”), forms of continuus (compare similar phonetic change in către < contra); the normal result in Romanian would have been *cătinu, to which the suffix -el may have been added, in analogy with încetinel.
