Perhaps from earlier *dımlıq, ultimately from dum-/dım-/tım-/ as reflected in Bashkir дым (dım, “moist, damp, humid”). The stem is unattested in Turkic languages prior to the 18th century.[1] Compare also Tatar дымлык (dımlıq, “vagina”), unless the latter is a calque of Russian влага́лище (vlagálišče).
