Latvian
Adjective
dailus
- (dialectal) accusative plural masculine of dails
Lithuanian
Etymology
From a Baltic root dail-, cognate with Latvian daiļš (“refined, beautiful”), with further origin uncertain. Derksen derives it from Proto-Indo-European *deyh₂-l-, an extension of *deyh₂- (“to shine”); for this etymology, see dìdelis (“big”) for more potential cognates. Alternatively, Derksen notes a potential connection with Proto-Slavic *dě̀lo (“deed, work”); perhaps this was confused with the root mentioned above.[1] Smoczynski's derivation from the o-grade of Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- (“to cut, split”),[2] is rejected by Derksen.
