From Proto-Turkic *dẹg- (to touch, reach).[2] Starostin et al. distinguish this root from the root *dẹg- (to cost, to be worth, etc),[3] whence also Azerbaijani dəyər (value) and dəyişmək (to change), although the later Proto-Turkic root is usually considered to be a semantic development of the former. Cognate with Turkish değmek, etc.
