Borrowed (1725) from Spanish faraute "presentor introducing the beginning of a comedy (1611)", "war messenger (1646)", and "herald"; borrowed as haraute (the germanic h becomes f in Castilian, XVth) from Old French heraut, hiraut (modern héraut) from Frankish *heriwald evolution of Proto-Germanic *harjawaldaz, a compound consisting of Proto-Indo-European *ker- (army) + *h₂welh₁- (to rule). Compare Walter, which has these elements reversed.
