From German Katoforite, that from Ancient Greek κατώφορος (katṓphoros, having a downward tendency), from κάτω (kátō, downward) and φέρω (phérō, to bear, carry), referring to the mineral's volcanic origin. The suffix -ite was already used for other minerals.
