Lithuanian
Etymology
Probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kedh₂- (“to split, scatter”); Smoczynski compares Ancient Greek σκεδάννυμι (skedánnumi, “to scatter, disperse”) and Albanian çaj (“to split, cleave”).[1] However, Beekes rejects the cognacy with the Greek, due to the semantic links being tenuous.[2] That said, Beekes appears to claim so based on kedė́ti being cognate with kedìnti (“to tug, pluck”), which does not necessarily invalidate Smoczynski's derivation.
