Borrowed from Proto-Norse , from Proto-Germanic *skaidaz; compare Swedish skede (“span of time”). No cognates are found in other Baltic-Finnic languages. The original meaning "forest clearing, mound at swamp; treeless area" can still be seen in the term keidassuo. The sense of "oasis" is an academic adaptation from the late 19th century.
