Turkish

Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish قولای (kolay), from Old Anatolian Turkish قولای (qolay), equivalent to kol (arm; earlier also 'hand') +‎ -ay, thus having the original meaning “handy”. Sevan Nişanyan compares the Old Turkic verbal stem (qol-, to want; beg), which is also derived from the stem meaning 'arm/hand'.

Cognate with Azerbaijani qolay (easy), Khalaj qolay (near), Gagauz колай, Karaim колай, Kazakh қолай (qolai, convenient), Karachay-Balkar and Kumyk къолай (qolay, better).
