From Ottoman Turkish قوزای (kuzay),[1] قوزی (kuzey),[2] ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kuŕ (“northern slope”). Cognate with Turkmen guzaý (“shaded side of a mountain”), Azerbaijani quzey (“north”) and possibly Uzbek kungay. Compare also dated kuz (“shadowed, sunless”).
