Etymology

Inherited from Old Polish ląd, land, borrowed from Middle High German in the 14th century. The original etymon is probably lende (landing place), from Old High German lentī (cf. regional German Lände), rather than lant (land), though the latter has influenced the sense. Both eventually derived from Proto-West Germanic *land, from Proto-Germanic *landą, from Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ- (land, heath).
