From Middle High German mæjen, from Old High German māen, from Proto-Germanic *mēaną. Cognate with German mähen, Dutch maaien, English mow. In Cimbrian, an extra -an is added to verbs when the infinitive would only have one syllable, e.g. zeinan (“to be”) (compare German sein).
