From Proto-Nuclear Polynesian *mata-qi-kao lit. 'point of growth' (compare with Hawaiian maiʻao “nail, claw, hoof”)[1] also related to Proto-Nuclear Polynesian *mati-kao.[2] See also matihao and hao.
