First attested in 1604. Borrowed from Latin mausōlēum (mausoleum), from Ancient Greek Μαύσωλος (Maúsōlos). Named for Mausolus (Μαύσωλος or Μαύσσωλλος), satrap of the Persian empire and ruler of Caria.[1]
