From Proto-Hmong-Mien *ɲɟuj (mouth, beak), perhaps borrowed from Old Chinese (OC *ʔseʔ, “beak, mouth”) or otherwise related to the latter's proto-form, Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-ts(j)ul (lip; beak). Cognate with Iu Mien nzuih.[1]
