Either from a highly irregular development of the unattested Vulgar Latin *fendita, past participle of Latin findō (“I cleave”),[1] or belonging to the alleged Nuragic substrate. Compare also Etruscan 𐌐𐌄𐌍𐌈𐌍𐌀 (penθna), 𐌐𐌄𐌍𐌈𐌖𐌍𐌀 (penθuna, “cippus, stele”).[2]
