Cf. Bulgarian похлупка (pohlupka). Alternatively derived from the earlier forms pleopă and plopă (now regional variants), from a Vulgar Latin *pluppa, metathesis of *pupla, from a contraction of Latin pūpula (“pupil”). [1] Compare the transition from Latin populus to Romanian plop (which also has a variant form pleop).
