Cognate to Finnish rähni, röhni, rähmi. Most likely metathesised from Proto-Finnic *närhi; compare the -näär in pasknäär (“jay”). Possibly a variant of the dialectal hähn. Compare Livonian ē'ņ, ē'ņõz, and dialectal Finnish hähnä.
