From earlier çaloio, from Arabic سَلَاوِيّ (salāwiyy), the nisba of سَلَا (salā, “Salé”), a city regarded from al-Andalus as markedly Berber, and thus Barbaric. The original Portuguese sense only referred to the rural region around Lisbon.
