Ultimately from Latin sardīna.
sardin m (collective, singulative sardina, paucal sardiniet)
sardin m (definite singular sardinen, indefinite plural sardiner, definite plural sardinene)
Many species of fish are known as sardines or pilchards, but the Norwegian word sardin is used only for Sardina pilchardus. In this species the word sardine is generally used for young fish, which are smaller, instead of pilchard.
sardin m (definite singular sardinen, indefinite plural sardinar, definite plural sardinane)
Borrowed from Italian sardina, from Latin sarda. Doublet of sard, sardell, and Sardinien.
