Inherited from Old Hungarian sarlow, borrowed from a Chuvash-type Turkic language before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries). Compare Chuvash ҫурла (śurla, sickle).[1]
