From szó (“word”) +‎ kincs (“treasure”). Calque of German Wortschatz. Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries.

     Az elsőben (Kunst der Prosa) bőven értekezik a' szerző a' német nyelv' lényegéről , a' változásokról , mellyeken keresztül ment , azon különbségekről , mellyek az ónémet magas költészeti szókincs , hol még minden szóegy idea volt, ' s a' mai nyelv között léteznek, melly utóbbi már az eredeti jelentésekről mit sem tud ' s egy holt jeltömeggé dermedett .

     In the first (Kunst der Prosa), the author talks extensively about the essence of the German language, the changes it went through, the differences between the High German poetic vocabulary, where every word was still an idea, and today's language exist, the latter of which no longer knows anything about the original meanings and has frozen into a mass of dead signs.
