From Proto-Vietic *k-rəŋ (“horn”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *d₂raŋ (“horn”). Cognate with Central Vietnamese trừng, Muong Bi khầng, Mon ဂြၚ် (krɛ̀aŋ, “horn, tusk”), Khmu cndrɨŋ, Khasi reng, Kharia ɖeɽeŋ, Santali ᱫᱤᱨᱤᱧ (diriñ).
