Inherited from Old Catalan tèrbol, from Vulgar Latin *turbulus, probably an alteration of Latin turbidus, with influence from turbulentus. The current form of the Catalan word was likely influenced by the verb terbolar, from an earlier *torbolar, from a Vulgar Latin *turbulāre (cf. Occitan trebolar, French troubler).[1] Compare Occitan trebol, French trouble, Romanian tulbure.
