Sino-Vietnamese word from 自由, from Japanese 自由 (jiyū), from Middle Chinese 自由 (d͡ziɪ^H jɨu, “self-determined; self-pleased”).

As pointed out in Iwatsuki (2013),^[1] during the late 19th and very early 20th century, the French word liberté was translated using expressions such as (sự) thong dong or thong thả, with tự do being adopted a bit later.

Tôi kể bấy nhiêu ông đó là chỉ tỏ ra rằng trong đời chuyên chế mà vẫn còn có người ra lo việc đời như thế, chí như đời bây giờ được tự do ngôn luận, được tự do xuất bản, được tự do diễn thuyết thì những người ra lo việc nước, việc đời bên họ biết là bao nhiêu.

     Just to give you some examples, during the 17th century, Jean Jacques Rousseau who wrote The Social Contract, La Fontaine who wrote Fables, Montesquieu who wrote The Spirit of the Laws, and Pascal, and Voltaire, etc. were all swordsmen who tried their best to break the authoritarian shackles and lead people to freedom. I'm telling you all this to say, even under authoritarianism, there were still people who contributed to society like those, so now that they are free to express, free to publish, free to give speeches, can you imagine how many societal contributions they've made?
