First attested in 1839. From the archaic talap (“base”) + -zat (noun-forming suffix). The noun talap is a blend of talp (“base; sole”) + alap (“base, foundation”). Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries.[1][2]
