Alternatively, may be cognate with Slavic words for “gadfly” (Czech ovád, Polish owad, Serbo-Croatian ȍbād / о̏ба̄д, Slovene obàd), but these may be from a Slavic formation *ob-vadъ rather than older Balto-Slavic.
