From Persian سنگین (sangin, “heavy”), possibly via Ottoman Turkish زنگین (zengin). /s/ → /z/ has been a frequent sound shift in specific dialects descending from Old Anatolian Turkish, often obfuscated by conservative Arabic-script spellings. Compare Azerbaijani ziyil (cf. Turkish siğil), zopa (cf. Turkish sopa), and zindan (“anvil”) which also underwent this irregular initial voicing.
